Luis Popoca Lopez, junior goalkeeper for Guadalupe Centers High School, was recognized as the Spectrum/Hy-Vee Athlete of the Week this week before the teams 5-0 win over Frontier STEM. Popoca has been the starting goalie for the Aztec Varsity soccer team for the past two years.
Luis admits that last year was his first year playing organized soccer and that he was nervous going into the season and position. Last year was a learning year for him and he took that knowledge with him into the summer where he trained in the areas he felt he needed to improve.
This year Luis has over 100 saves for the Aztecs. He has been the difference in many games, especially in a recent overtime game that went to penalty kicks where Popoca saved two of the four shots. Luis has earned the trust of his teammates and coaches through his hard work and dedication to his position.
Luis is the second soccer player in the history of the school's program to be named as HyVee Athlete of the Week.
